Joint venture partners, Daiwa House Australia and EG, have announced the completion of their landmark Flour Mill of Summer Hill development, one of Sydney’s most significant urban renewal projects, allowing owners to take up residences in their new homes.
The four-staged project was delivered over 5 years, with the first two stages having been inhabited since mid-2017 and the final stage completed in early February 2019. The former home of Allied Mills industrial site now boasts a 2.4 hectares masterplanned community with 360 contemporary apartments/terraces, retail and heritage commercial space, across 11 separate buildings.
The site has made use of its industrial heritage converting two separate silo buildings into apartments and utilising galvanised steel, off-form concrete, weathered timber, brick materials to maintain the contemporary twist on the industrial external character of the new structures. Hidero Eto, Director, Daiwa House Australia, said “a key objective of the project was to not just maintain the site’s heritage, but to celebrate it”.
Residents are also thrilled with the result. “We like the idea of adaptive re-use, particularly on the scale of this development. We chose the Wheat Silos because silos are totally unique, and the building and our apartment will not look like a cookie cutter standard high rise offering,” said Anne Matthews, who purchased her apartment in 2014.
The park, children’s play area and plaza are now fully accessible to residents and the local community with curated retail, boutique food and beverage operators, and office spaces to follow in the coming months.
